The cottage was built in 1920 by a Melbourne solicitor as his summer residence to take respite from Melbourne's summer heat in the cooler Dandenongs. It has been a family home until 1980s when it became a hills Bed and Breakfast. It is very large by cottage standards and easily accommodates two spacious apartments each containing 3 rooms. There are many original features i.e. the beautiful lead light windows, high ceilings and roomy verandas. The cottage gardens are beautiful and attract many bird species as well as the ducks that come to be fed. Ted Woolrich was one of the first nurserymen of the Hills and helped establish the National Rhododendron Gardens. Iris Woolrich his wife, started the Cuckoo restaurant, then named Quambie. In a sad state of disrepair by 2003, it has now been transformed into a character-filled home with art deco features and resonating with local history, providing space, light and comfort in idyllic surroundings.
